Just this once, my post will today be in French AND English ! This is thanks to our new Expat portrait of the day : the adorable and incredible english expat Nikki !
Yep ! Hope your'e impressed ! Lini's Choice is international !!!!
But hey ... please forgive all the mistakes in english ...

When I arrived in Thailand, Nikki was one of the first one to welcome me on Twitter. When I finally met her, I was struck by her good mood, her crazy energy et her big smile ! I also noticed that she was a goldmine of restaurant and bar recommandations in Bangkok, Asia and Europe (basically everywhere in fact)
Nikki knows absolutely all the best spots and you can totally trust her recommandations ! Her
blog A British Girl Abroad  is not to be missed by all bons vivants and gourmets ! She shares all her best adresses in Asia but all around the world too !
When we travelled to Singapour/Siem Reap/Phnom Pehn/Penang , her help and blog were precious to find some truly hidden treasures !

In December she left Bangkok and moved to Siem Reap- Cambodia (next to Angkor) in a hotel as prestigious as it is magnificent. Can't wait to go back to see her and discover all the great places in Siem Reap !

Thanks a million Nikki for taking the time for this interview !!

Who are you, where do you come from ?
Originally I am from the Uk but I spent the first 12 years of my life living overseas, in Angola and then Belgium. Moving to the UK was a bit of a culture shock!

Today you live in Siem Reap, but I know it’s not your first expatriation. What other countries have you lived in ?
After growing up in Angola and Belgium I spent the next 17 years in the UK before getting itchy feet and moving to Lebanon. From here I spent a few months in Kuwait then it was onto Asia. I spent 2 years in Singapore then a year and a half in Bangkok. I have lived here in Siem Reap, Cambodia for the past 7 months.

What country did you prefer ?
What a question! I have happy memories of everywhere I have lived (admittedly not many from Kuwait though!) Probably Lebanon and Cambodia I would have to say. They are both such interesting countries and the people are so lovely. I felt at home almost immediately.

Quel pays as tu moins aimé ?

What country did you like the least ?
Kuwait. I knew it was going to be a big adjustment from Lebanon (which is really much more European than Middle eastern in my mind)but the lack of freedom and real risk to my personal safety was stressful.

You work in the F&B/hotel industry. Is it a calling ?
I suppose so! I have always loved entertaining, hosting people and I suppose, looking after them to an extent. I’m lucky that I’m able to do a job I’m passionate about as well as travel and see some incredible places whilst I’m at it!

Angkor, Siem Reap

Do you think you’ll go back to the UK ? Do you miss it ?
Who knows! I’m certainly in no rush to live there again but never say never. London is an exciting City to live in and I definitely have twinges when I see an exciting new restaurant has opened up. It would be lovely to live nearer my family and friends too but in the meantime we have skype and I try to travel somewhere to see my family every year – in fact I’m looking forward to seeing them next month when we all visit Sri Lanka.

How’s life in Siem Reap ?
I love it. Cambodian people are just so lovely, friendly, kind and honest. I have been made to feel so welcome. The countryside is beautiful and whilst there’s not a huge amount of things to do once you’ve lived here a while it’s a fun little town. As it is obviously geared up for tourists we can get anything you might miss from home whether it’s a great coffee shop, a cool little wine bar or artisan bread and charcuterie . It’s also a lot of fun to immerse yourself into the local culture as well of course and I’m lucky that I have friends of all nationalities from Khmer to English, French, Indian, Australian and more.

Can you recommend nice places in Siem Reap ?
My blog is full of them. I would definitely visiting Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor whether for cocktails in their famous Elephant Bar or Fine Khmer cuisine in Restaurant Le Grand. For brunch, coffee and fresh juices it has to be Sister Srey and the Hive and I can hang out in either place for hours at a time. In the evening I like to have cocktails at Miss Wong or the Old Asana Wooden House and I always know someone at the bar in Charlie’s which is a lot of fun. For shopping I love Garden of Desire by a talented Khmer jeweler who studied in France, also the Artisans d’Angkor has beautiful silks and there are some great boutiques in Kandal village, an up and coming neighborhood in the centre of town. Oh and then there are the temples of course! You can’t visit Siem Reap without spending plenty of time there!

Can you recommend nice places in Bangkok?
I love Soul Food Mahanakorn in Thonglor for great cocktails and delicious regional Thai food and Bolan restaurant is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten a. For brunch I would go to Rocket Coffee Bar on Soi 49 and the cocktails at Vesper are probably the best in town. At lunch I like to explore the old town and enjoy the eclectic menu at Seven Spoons and whilst Opposite Mess Hall is about to close, their new restaurant Daisy Matthews will be opening sometime later this year which I am really excited about.

Any advices for people working in the F&B/hotel industry, tempted by expatriation ?
Go for it! It’s a lot of work like any hospitality job but the benefits far out way the cons! I have such a great quality of life, I get to travel more and meet the most interesting people every day .
I wouldn’t change a thing!

Thanks Nikki for this great interview that left me super hungry !!!
